Analysis of LWR model with fundamental diagram subject to uncertainties

چکیده
The LWR model is of interest since it is simple and can successfully reproduce some essential features of traffic flow, such as the formation and propagation of traffic disturbances. In this paper, we investigate the LWR model from an uncertainty perspective. We attempt to analyze how reliable the LWR model prediction will be if the fundamental diagram (FD) in use is not accurately specified. To fulfill this end, we postulate a flux function (equivalently a fundamental diagram) driven by a random free flow speed, which accommodates the scattering feature observed in the speed-density data. We provide essential mathematical properties and solution schemes of the LWR model with the probabilistic fundamental diagram. In case studies, the approach to evaluate the uncertainty of traffic disturbance propagation with this model is presented. We find that if fundamental diagram in a LWR model cannot be perfectly specified, the uncertainty associated with the location of a traffic disturbance would increase over time. In contrast, the magnitude of the traffic disturbance can still be accurately predicted.

Heterogeneous Traffic Flow Modelling with the Lwr Model Using Passenger-car Equivalents
SUMMARY This paper presents an extension of Lighthill, Whitham and Richards' dynamic traffic flow model (LWR) to a number of vehicle classes. Each class will be described by a separate fundamental diagram. When the various diagrams are similar in shape a scaling can be carried out that is related to the passenger-car equivalents. We present both an analytical framework and a numerical computati...
متن کاملThe Inhomogeneous Kinematic Wave Traffic Flow Model as a Resonant Nonlinear System
The kinematic wave traffic flow model for an inhomogeneous road is studied as a resonant nonlinear system, where an additional conservation law is introduced to model time-invariant road inhomogeneities such as changes in grades or number of lanes. This resonant system has two families of waves, one of which is a standing wave originated at the inhomogeneity. The nature of these waves are exami...
متن کامل"A Note on the Entropy Solutions of the Hydrodynamic Model of Traffic Flow" Revisited
This note revisits a paper from Velan and Florian [Velan and Florian(2002)] dealing with the entropy condition in traffic flow models. It aims to clarify the application of this condition for non-differentiable fundamental diagrams and then to correct some misunderstandings that appear in the above-mentioned paper. Notably, this note clearly exhibits that the non-smoothness of the fundamental d...
متن کاملFuzzy tonnage-average grade model based on extension principle
Due to the nature of the geological and mining activities, different input parameters in the grade estimation and mineral resource evaluation are always tainted with uncertainties. It is possible to investigate the uncertainties related to the measurements and parameters of the variogram model using the fuzzy kriging method instead of the kriging method. The fuzzy kriging theory has already bee...
متن کاملAn algebraic approach for modeling and simulation of road traffic networks
We present in this article an algebraic approach to model and simulate road traffic networks. By defining a set of road traffic systems and adequate concatenating operators in that set, we show that large regular road networks can be easily modeled and simulated. We define elementary road traffic systems which we then connect to each other and obtain larger systems. For the traffic modeling, we...
